Executive Summary

The two greatest crises facing development in South Africa are the collapse of the non-profit sector and the escalation of HIV/AIDS. The XE4 Foundation for Excellence focuses on winning these 2 wars.

It is a non-profit management consultancy that provides training and tools for sustainable non-profit organisations and excellent HIV/AIDS workplace programmes. Building the back-office of non-profits is more important than giving them money, and transferring management skills is the greatest gift CSI managers can offer.

In 2005, Errol Goetsch wrapped the training and support material of 5 years of field-work into Excel (and OpenSource) spreadsheets that donors and NPO’s use in their daily work. The wide range of on-the-job tools gives organisations the ability to self-diagnose and self-correct their weaknesses, without relying on expensive consultants and wasted further training. In many cases, the software is unique in the world. The tools were always low-cost but from 2005 on, they are all free. Errol hopes that HR managers running volunteer programmes will use the Giving Exchange to adopt the software so corporate staff can take the tools to non-profits of their choice and apply their management skills.

Our History

At the end of 1999, XE4 was commissioned for a feasibility study for a proposed Centre of Excellence. The NPO needed the Centre for its sustainability. It was in financial distress. I learnt that the standard approach of a Balanced Scorecard, with debt, liquidity and solvency ratios etc. would not work in a non-profit environment. As a result, a system for measuring sustainability was born.

Sustainability = Respect x Loyalty x Trust = S = RLT

Since then, a system for measuring excellence as been added. The formula was discovered in 2002 and became part of my workshops from 2003 onwards.

Excellence = Economy x Efficiency x Effectiveness x Equity = X = E4

In subsequent years, as I consulted in change and performance management, and lately in CSI and CSR (Corporate Social Investment and Responsibility), the body of knowledge grew.

Success = Quantity x Quality of work = Strategy x Operations

A theory of Corporate Governance (the decisions of directors and actions of employees, and the role of the organisation and each department) was added in 2004.

Today, that initial study has grown into a core set of simple insights, centred around excellence, corporate governance (what goes into excellence) and sustainability (what comes out of excellence). These "no brainers" support a set of graphs that describe and formulae that direct and measure the organisation's core functions. They in turn enable directors on board to accomplish corporate governance, and members of staff to accomplish excellence, and the whole to accomplish sustainability.

FEEDBACK FROM TRAINING

XE4's 1-day and 2-day training workshops are supported by software so that we know why to change and how to change and what to do to make that change

Thanks again for a stimulating workshop – I am still trying to get my head around everything and will probably take some time over that.

Helmut Bertelsmann (NBI)

Thanks for a very stimulating workshop. It was very good and very helpful. We both enjoyed it very much and gained a great deal (take a bow). Tim Smith (Cathca)

You are really an inspiration to the nation! Thanks a million! Corrie Ras (S.A. Federation for Mental Health)

I must say I really enjoyed the course. It was an wide eye-opener. Professionally, I’m empowered, you are a smart boy, and your course just solved my problem. You had all the words for the very unstable logic I had in terms of reporting, I thank you. Your course is most informative, I enjoyed it,  not quite what I thought would be in my spoon when I got there. Man, you make a woman think. Portia Kwinika (Pretoria Sungardens Hospice)

Indeed it was such a great day. Often in our daily work we tend to forget basic stuff and they impact the overall organization. I had a great day. Tinyiko Chauke (Stats SA)
Thank you for a brilliant day - an eye-opening day. Candice Morkel (North West Prov Govt)

My head is still buzzing this morning with all the great things we learnt yesterday – all the enthusiasm I was feeling. Peter Laubscher (Leprosy Mission)

I am totally stunned by the complexity and comprehensiveness of your models and your ability to use Excel. There is so much potential in your work to make something very useful to both NGOs and CSI depts. I am sure that you are on the right track. Marcus Coetzee (ICMS)
